Ocella is easy to use.
Simply take one pill per day. Birth control pills work best if you take them at the same time every day and no more than 24 hours apart.

Ocella birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Drospirenone 3 mg (progesterone) and Ethinyl Estradiol 30 mcg (estrogen).
Possible yet generally mild Ocella birth control side effects may include: nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, decreased sex drive, and fatigue. Many women notice desirable side effects like lighter periods, fewer mood swings, and improved acne!
Serious side effects such as blood clots have been reported in women taking Ocella, but these are rare (1/1000). Blood clots can happen in different parts of the body, including the stomach (causing abdominal pain), the legs (causing swelling, redness, and pain), the lungs or heart (causing shortness of breath and chest pain), and the brain (causing double vision or severe headache).
We know this sounds scary. Just remember the likelihood of experiencing blood clots or other serious side effects while taking Ocella is extremely low. Doctors agree that the benefit of avoiding unwanted pregnancy far outweigh the potential risks of birth control medications.

Ocella is a combination oral contraceptive pill containing 3 mg of drospirenone and 30 mcg of Ethinyl estradiol. It is a birth control medication that prevents unwanted pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation) and by thickening the mucus in the cervix, which makes it harder for sperm to reach the uterus.
Young and old women may also use Ocella to treat moderate acne. Sometimes, doctors prescribe Ocella to treat heavy or painful periods, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts, and/or treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) like depression, anxiety, and decreased energy.
Ocella birth control is not a good choice for you if you have certain conditions such as high blood pressure or blood clotting problems. If you have those issues, Pandia Health’s expert birth control doctors recommend other options including progestin-only pill (POPs), IUDs with hormone (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena, Skyla), copper IUDs, implants (nexplanon), the birth control shot (depo-provera), or condoms and spermicide.
Ocella is unlikely to cause weight gain. Because it acts as a diuretic, some women actually end up losing excess water weight. Dr. Sophia Yen (our CEO/founder) suggests that you drink 8 glasses of water a day when on this medication.
Always talk to your doctor before starting a new medication like Ocella. Let your doctor know what types of medications you’re currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and recreational drugs. Some drugs may interact with Ocella and make it less effective, including drugs used to treat cancer, seizures, HIV, and chronic hepatitis C.

Ocella can make you pee, so you should drink plenty of water while taking it—otherwise, you might experience headaches and dehydration. Going on a long trip? Stay hydrated and take frequent walking breaks to prevent blood clots.
Like any medication, Ocella may contain ingredients that some women are allergic to. Signs of an allergic reaction to Ocella are unlikely and generally mild, such as dizziness, itching, and rashes. Call 911 right away if you experience trouble breathing or swelling in the mouth, lips, and tongue. We know that sounds scary—but don’t worry. Serious side effects or allergic reactions are extremely rare!
Some women shouldn’t take Ocella, such as anyone with a history of poorly controlled diabetes or high blood pressure, heart disease, hyperkalemia, kidney disease, adrenal gland disorders, liver cancer, or severe migraines.
