What is Clindamycin Gel?

Clindamycin phosphate gel is a topical antibiotic that decreases the number of acne lesions, pimples, and comedones. It works by killing the bacteria that cause acne.

Clindamycin phosphate lotion contains cetostearyl alcohol (2.5%); glycerin; glyceryl stearate SE (with potassium monostearate); isostearyl alcohol (2.5%); methylparaben (0.3%); sodium lauroyl sarcosinate; stearic acid; and purified water.

Clindamycin phosphate gel side effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when using Clindamycin phosphate. Minor ones include skin dryness, itching, redness, mild burning, or worsening of acne. Those effects will decrease with continued use of the medication.

If you experience blistering, severe burning/swelling of the skin, eye redness and watering (conjunctivitis), eyelid swelling, or skin discoloration, STOP the medication and tell your doctor immediately. Also, rarely this medication can cause discoloration of the skin. Dark-skinned people may notice a lightening in skin color in the area where you use this medication.

The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but STOP the medication and seek immediate medical attention (call 911 or go to the ER) if you experience any of the following symptoms: severe dizziness, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), trouble breathing.

If you have ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or other intestinal inflammatory conditions \, make sure you tell your doctor about your medical history before using Clindamycin. Consult your doctor if significant diarrhea occurs.

In some people, Clindamycin can cause an allergic reaction or anaphylaxis. Please consult your doctor if you are experiencing itching, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing or swelling in your hands, face, or mouth. Similarly, if you experience serious symptoms, including blisters, peeling, itching, rashes, ulcers, or sores, please stop the Clindamycin and call your doctor.
