What is Epiduo Forte?

Epiduo Forte gel is a topical medication used to treat acne. It contains two active ingredients, adapalene (0.3%) and benzoyl peroxide (2.5%). Adapalene is a retinoid that reduces inflammation associated with acne and Benzoyl Peroxide kills the bacteria and helps slough off dead skin cells. Epiduo Forte helps to reduce the risk of developing acne scars. Read More

How to use Epiduo Forte

Before applying Epiduo Forte, wash your face with warm water, a gentle cleanser or mild soap and pat dry. Apply a thin layer (about a pea-sized amount) of the medication to the affected areas by acne once daily, preferably in the evening. Avoid getting Epiduo Forte on your eyes, lips, and nostrils. Rub it gently until it is absorbed into the skin. Wash your hands immediately after applying the topical gel.

Epiduo Forte Dosage

Epiduo Forte gel mixes Adapalene 0.3% and Benzoyl peroxide 2.5%.

Epiduo Forte Benefits

Some benefits of using Epiduo Gel include:

  • Effective in treating moderate to severe acne.
  • Reduces the number and severity of pimples and improves the overall appearance of the skin.
  • Kills bacteria and reduces inflammation, targeting two of the main causes of acne.
  • Easy to apply directly to the affected areas of the skin.
  • Well-tolerated and side effects are usually mild and temporary.
  • Convenient because it combines two strong ingredients that are normally in separate products. Allows you to enjoy the benefits of both of them by applying only one gel.
  • Prevents acne scars.

Epiduo Forte Side Effects

Epiduo Fortel may cause side effects for some people.

Common side effects of Epiduo Forte include dryness, redness, itching, burning, and peeling of the skin where the medication is applied. These side effects are usually mild and go away within a few weeks of use. However, if you experience severe irritation or blistering, stop using Epiduo Forte and contact your doctor immediately.

Other possible side effects include skin discoloration (can get lighter or darker) and sensitive skin to the sun. In rare cases, Epiduo Forte can cause severe allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives, or blistering of the skin.

These adverse reactions and symptoms may or may not be accompanied by fever. If you experience any of those symptoms, stop using the medication, wash it off, and seek medical attention immediately. Call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

Epiduo Forte Warnings

Epiduo Forte gel is for external use only and should not be ingested. Avoid getting Epiduo Forte on your eyes, lips, and nostrils. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use Epiduo Forte if you are allergic to adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, or any other ingredients in the medication. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using Epiduo Forte.

Some warnings to consider before using Epiduo Forte are:

  • Epiduo Forte should not be used by individuals who are allergic to benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, or any other ingredient in the medication.
  • Epiduo Forte may cause skin irritation, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. If irritation persists or becomes severe, discontinue use and consult your doctor. Avoid using harsh soaps and other skin products that may dry your skin.
  • Avoid getting Epiduo Forte in your eyes, nose, mouth, or on your lips. If this happens, rinse the affected area with water and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Benzoyl peroxide may bleach hair and clothing. Be careful when applying Epiduo Forte to avoid contact with the gel with clothing or hair. The benzoyl peroxide may bleach your pillowcases, towels, t-shirts, and clothing.
  • Epiduo Forte may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun exposure and tanning booths or tanning beds. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
  • It is important to use Epiduo Forte as prescribed, do not use more or less than recommended by your doctor.
  • Most experts recommend stopping this medication for pregnant women. The medication is absorbed by the skin and there is not enough significant scientific data to show it does not harm the growing fetus/unborn baby. There is insufficient human scientific data to show that the medication passes into the breast milk so breastfeeding is probably okay but always consult with your doctor to get a professional opinion for your specific case.
  • Consult your doctor before starting to use any other herbal medications or other drugs. They may interact with the medication.

Epiduo Forte Interactions

We are only going to list some interactions of Epiduo Forte gel here, this is not a complete list. Talk to your doctor before using any prescription medications with Epiduo gel and vice versa.

Drug interactions:
Epiduo Forte may interact with certain medications, such as:

  • oral retinoids and other topical retinoids, which may increase the risk of skin irritation. It is important to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking before using Epiduo Forte.
  • Aminolevulinic acid makes you sensitive to bright lights and combining it with Epiduo Forte which has adapalene will increase your risk of severe sunburn.

Interactions with other topical medications:

  • Epiduo Forte should not be used with other topical acne treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids, because this may increase the risk of skin irritation and dryness.

Interactions with skincare products:

  • Epiduo Forte may interact with certain skincare products that contain high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, or exfoliating agents. These products may increase the risk of skin irritation and dryness when used in combination with Epiduo Gel.

Interactions with cosmetic products:

  • It is generally safe to use cosmetic products while using Epiduo Gel. However, it is recommended in general that you choose non-comedogenic and oil-free cosmetics to avoid clogging pores and worsening acne.

Interactions with other acne treatments:

  • Epiduo Forte should not be used in combination with other topical acne treatments unless specifically recommended by a healthcare provider. Using multiple acne treatments at the same time may increase the risk of skin irritation and dryness and/or reduce the effectiveness of the treatments.

Interactions with skincare ingredients:

  • Epiduo Forte contains adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. It is important to check the ingredients of other skincare products you are using to avoid any potential interactions or excessive skin dryness and irritation. Avoid products that contain high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, or exfoliating agents.
  • Avoid using harsh soaps or cleansers, coloring hair, hair removal products or waxes on the area that is being treated with Epiduo Forte because this can make that area even more irritated.

Interactions with antibiotics:

  • There are no known significant interactions between Epiduo Forte and antibiotics. However, always tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking including Epiduo Forte.

Interactions with diseases (Epiduo Forte can make these diseases worse):

  • Eczema/Atopic dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis

Please, note these are only some interactions. Always let your doctor know that you are on Epiduo gel before starting any new medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Epiduo Forte do to your skin?

Epiduo Forte contains a combination of two active ingredients – adapalene and benzoyl peroxide – which work together to reduce inflammation, kill the bacteria that cause acne, and prevent new breakouts from forming. With regular use, Epiduo Forte can improve the texture and appearance of the skin, reducing the number and severity of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads and thus reducing the chances of acne scars.

Is Epiduo Forte a retinol or retinoid?

Yes, Epiduo Forte is a retinoid. Adapalene, one of the active ingredients in Epiduo Forte, is a type of retinoid that works by regulating the growth of skin cells, reducing inflammation, and preventing the formation of comedones, which are the precursors to pimples. The other active ingredient in Epiduo Forte, benzoyl peroxide, is not a retinoid but is used to kill bacteria that cause acne.

Is Epiduo stronger than differin?

Epiduo is generally considered to be stronger than Differin, as it contains two active ingredients (adapalene and benzoyl peroxide) that target multiple factors that contribute to acne, while Differin only contains adapalene. Differin is often used as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate acne, while Epiduo is typically reserved for more severe cases.

How long does it take for Epiduo Forte to work?

The time it takes for Epiduo Forte to work varies depending on the severity of the acne and other factors such as skin type, age, and overall health. In general, it may take up to 12 weeks of consistent use before seeing significant improvement in acne symptoms. However, some patients may see improvement much sooner, within the first few weeks of use. It is important to use Epiduo Forte as prescribed and to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully to achieve the best results.
