Clindamycin phosphate lotion is a topical antibiotic that is used in conjunction with other medications to treat and prevent acne lesions, pimples, and comedones. It works by killing the bacteria that cause acne.
Clindamycin lotion is super easy to use! First, clean the affected area of your face with a gentle cleanser and dry it completely. Apply a small amount of Clindamycin lotion on the affected area, rubbing it in gently on the skin before bedtime. It is recommended that you wait 30 minutes after washing and/or shaving your face before applying the lotion. The alcohol in the lotion may irritate freshly washed or shaven skin.
Keep in mind that Clindamycin lotion is for external use only. Do not take it by mouth.
Do not get it in your eyes. If this happens, rinse your eyes with cool water. Do not use it more often than directed.
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you can. If it’s almost time for your next dose, go ahead and skip the missed dose and do your next dose, going back to your regular schedule.
Clindamycin phosphate lotion has 1% clindamycin and the dosage is “use a small amount over your acne-prone areas.”
Clindamycin lotion also contains inactive ingredients: cetostearyl alcohol (2.5%); glycerin; glyceryl stearate SE (with potassium monostearate); isostearyl alcohol (2.5%); methylparaben (0.3%); sodium lauroyl sarcosinate; stearic acid; and purified water.
Clindamycin lotion is for external use only. Use as directed on the prescription label, and do not share this prescription with others.
Severe allergic reactions to this medication are rare. Severe skin reactions to Clindamycin are possible but also rare. Seek help immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
If you use this over a large portion of your body and get diarrhea, see a doctor.
Share your medical history with your prescribing doctor. Do not use this medication if you have a history of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s) or intestinal problems (colitis).
Clindamycin lotion is considered safe if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding.
Interactions with other prescription medications are not expected. Let your doctor know which products you use in your skincare routine to lessen the likelihood of any interactions or negative reactions.
The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when using Clindamycin phosphate. Minor ones include skin dryness, itching, redness, mild burning, or worsening of acne. Those effects will decrease with continued use of the medication.
If you experience blistering, severe burning/swelling of the skin, eye redness, and watering (conjunctivitis), eyelid swelling, or skin discoloration, STOP the medication and tell your doctor immediately.
The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but STOP the medication and seek immediate medical attention (call 911 or go to the ER) if you experience any of the following symptoms: severe dizziness, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), trouble breathing.
Clindamycin phosphate lotion is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe acne. It works by preventing bacteria from growing. Clindamycin phosphate lotion also helps with decreasing inflammation.
Clindamycin is usually combined with other acne treatments, like benzoyl peroxide or retinoids, and can work quite well in treating acne. Clindamycin should never be used alone to treat acne because of the risk of antibiotic resistance and because most acne needs a retinoid.
If you use insurance, then the price will depend on your coverage (though many insurances will at least charge a copay and if you are 35 or older they generally will NOT cover it). If you are paying out of pocket, the price is $55 for a bottle.
If any side effect is experienced while using clindamycin lotion or gel, they should go away after stopping its use. Always contact your prescribing doctor if you experience any side effects. And call 911 or go to the ER if you experience any difficulty breathing, itchy rash, etc.

Acne is stubborn, and it can take time for it to go away. Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider if your acne doesn’t improve within about 6 weeks or worsens.
It may take 8 to 12 weeks to notice an improvement in your skin using Clindamycin lotion. You should continue using Clindamycin for as long as prescribed by your healthcare provider. If you don’t see any improvement in the first 3 months, contact your doctor to see if other medications might work better for you. Make sure you use clindamycin while also using benzoyl peroxide soap to prevent bacterial resistance to clindamycin.
