How to use Femring

Using Femring is simple and convenient. Your healthcare provider will provide you with a prescription and instructions on how to insert and remove the vaginal ring. Here are the general steps for using Femring:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Remove the Femring from its protective pouch.
  • Hold the ring between your thumb and index finger, and gently squeeze it together.
  • Insert the folded ring into your vagina as far as it comfortably goes. You may choose to stand with one foot on a chair, lie down, or sit with your knees bent.
  • Once inserted, Femring will slowly release estrogen over a period of 90 days. You can leave it in place during sexual intercourse and while urinating, no need to remove it. If you choose to remove it, you may simply rinse it off with water and replace it into your vagina after sex (or anytime it falls out).
  • After 90 days, remove the ring by hooking your finger through the ring and gently pulling it out. It will collapse on itself as it is removed and should not hurt.

Remember to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the specific dosage and duration of Femring use.

Femring Side Effects

Like any medication, Femring may cause side effects in some women. Common side effects of Estring may include:

  • Headache
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal discomfort or irritation
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Back pain

These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, it is important to contact your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects are rare but can include an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and certain types of cancer. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Chest pain with or without shortness of breath, weakness or fatigue
  • Severe headache
  • Changes in vision or speech
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, tongue, mouth or throat)

If you experience any of the above warning signs of a serious side effect, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Femring Benefits

Femring offers several benefits for women experiencing menopause symptoms. Some of the key benefits of Femring include:

  • Relief from vaginal dryness: Femring provides continuous low-dose estrogen therapy directly to the vaginal tissues, helping to alleviate vaginal dryness, itching, and discomfort.
  • Improved sexual comfort: By restoring moisture and elasticity to the vaginal tissues, Femring can enhance sexual comfort and reduce pain or discomfort during intercourse.
  • Localized treatment: Femring delivers estrogen directly to the vaginal area, minimizing systemic absorption and reducing the risk of certain side effects associated with oral estrogen therapy.
  • Convenience: Femring only needs to be inserted once every 90 days, providing continuous symptom relief without the need to remember daily medication.

Femring Contraindications

While Femring is generally safe and effective, there are some contraindications and precautions to consider. Femring should not be used if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Known or suspected breast cancer or any estrogen-dependent cancer.
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been evaluated by a healthcare provider.
  • Known or suspected pregnancy.
  • History of blood clots or current thrombosis (blood clotting disorder).
  • Liver disease or impaired liver function.
  • Allergy or hypersensitivity to any components of Estring.

It is important to discuss your medical history and any existing conditions with your healthcare provider before starting Femring treatment to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.

FAQ's

What is Femring used for?

Femring is a type of medication used on hormone replacement therapy (HRT or MHT) and it’s used to treat symptoms of menopause in women. It contains an estrogen hormone called estradiol, which is released slowly into the body through a flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina.

What's the difference between Femring and Estring (estradiol)?

Both Estring and Femring are vaginal rings containing estradiol which is a plant-based, body-identical, bio-identical form of estrogen that is used for menopause. However, they differ in the amount of estrogen released daily. Estring provides a lower dose of estrogen and is specifically used to treat vaginal symptoms. In contrast, Femring can be used to treat both vaginal symptoms and hot flashes.

Is femring a substitute for estrogen?

Femring is not a substitute for estrogen, but rather it is a method of delivering estrogen hormone to the body. It provides a localized release of estrogen in the vaginal area to help relieve symptoms such as vaginal dryness, itching, and discomfort.

What are the benefits of the estrogen ring?

The benefits of using the estrogen ring include:

– Relief from vaginal symptoms: Estrogen helps restore the vaginal tissues, reducing dryness, itching, and pain during intercourse.
– Improved urinary symptoms: Estrogen can help alleviate urinary problems such as frequent urination, urgency, and urinary tract infections.
– Prevention of osteoporosis: Estrogen plays a role in maintaining bone density, and HRT can help prevent or slow down the loss of bone mass that occurs with aging.
– Relief from hot flashes and night sweats: While the estrogen ring primarily targets vaginal symptoms, it may also alleviate other menopausal symptoms in some women.

It is important to note that hormone replacement therapy, including Femring, may have potential risks and side effects. Always consult with a healthcare professional to discuss and outweight the benefits and potential risks before starting any hormone therapy.
