How to use Estring

Using Estring is simple and convenient. Your healthcare provider will provide you with a prescription and instructions on how to insert and remove the vaginal ring. Here are the general steps for using Estring:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Remove the Estring from its protective pouch.
  • Hold the ring between your thumb and index finger, and gently squeeze it together.
  • Insert the folded ring into your vagina as far as it comfortably goes. You may choose to stand with one foot on a chair, lie down, or sit with your knees bent.
  • Once inserted, Estring will slowly release estrogen over a period of 90 days. You can leave it in place during sexual intercourse and while urinating, no need to remove it. If you choose to remove it, you may simply rinse it off with water and replace it into your vagina after sex (or anytime it falls out).
  • After 90 days, remove the ring by hooking your finger through the ring and gently pulling it out. It will collapse on itself as it is removed and should not hurt.

Remember to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the specific dosage and duration of Estring use.

Estring Side Effects

Like any medication, Estring may cause side effects in some women. Common side effects of Estring may include:

  • Headache
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal discomfort or irritation
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Back pain

These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, it is important to contact your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects are rare but can include an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and certain types of cancer. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Chest pain with or without shortness of breath, weakness or fatigue
  • Severe headache
  • Changes in vision or speech
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, tongue, mouth or throat)

If you experience any of the above warning signs of a serious side effect, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Estring Benefits

Estring offers several benefits for women experiencing menopause symptoms. Some of the key benefits of Estring include:

  • Relief from vaginal dryness: Estring provides continuous low-dose estrogen therapy directly to the vaginal tissues, helping to alleviate vaginal dryness, itching, and discomfort.
  • Improved sexual comfort: By restoring moisture and elasticity to the vaginal tissues, Estring can enhance sexual comfort and reduce pain or discomfort during intercourse.
  • Localized treatment: Estring delivers estrogen directly to the vaginal area, minimizing systemic absorption and reducing the risk of certain side effects associated with oral estrogen therapy.
  • Convenience: Estring only needs to be inserted once every 90 days, providing continuous symptom relief without the need to remember daily medication.

Estring Contraindications

While Estring is generally safe and effective, there are some contraindications and precautions to consider. Estring should not be used if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Known or suspected breast cancer or any estrogen-dependent cancer.
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been evaluated by a healthcare provider.
  • Known or suspected pregnancy.
  • History of blood clots or current thrombosis (blood clotting disorder).
  • Liver disease or impaired liver function.
  • Allergy or hypersensitivity to any components of Estring.

It is important to discuss your medical history and any existing conditions with your healthcare provider before starting Estring treatment to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.

FAQ's

How long is it safe to use estring?

It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for specific guidance on the safe duration of Estring usage. This will depend on how you respond to the treatment and other factors.

What's the difference between Estring (estradiol) and Femring?

Both Estring and Femring are vaginal rings containing estradiol which is a plant-based, body-identical, bio-identical form of estrogen that is used for menopause. However, they differ in the amount of estrogen released daily. Estring provides a lower dose of estrogen and is specifically used to treat vaginal symptoms. In contrast, Femring can be used to treat both vaginal symptoms and hot flashes.

How long does it take for Estring (estradiol) to work?

You should start noticing some improvement in your symptoms after 2-3 weeks of treatment.

What should you do if Estring (estradiol) falls out?

It’s unlikely that an Estring completely falls out of your vagina, but if it does, rinse the ring with warm (never hot) water and place it back into your vagina. Never use a new ring unless it’s been more than 3 months since you started using it.

What happens if you accidentally leave Estring (estradiol) in longer than 3 months?

Estring (estradiol) releases a sufficient amount of estrogen for a 3-month treatment period. If not replaced, the ring may not provide enough estrogen to alleviate symptoms effectively. Moreover, there is an increased risk of vaginal infections and complications. Remember to note the initial usage date of the ring and set a reminder for replacement.
