How to Use Heather

It’s easy to use Heather. Just take one pill every day at the same exact time. Taking Heather with food may help prevent nausea or upset stomach. There are no placebo/sugar pills in a pack of Heather or any other POP.

That means you get an uninterrupted dose of progestin every day that you take the medication for however long you take the medication.

Heather Dosage

Heather birth control pills have only one main active ingredient, Norethindrone [0.35mg].

Heather Side Effects

The risk of Heather side effects is low. Some women notice minor changes in their menstrual periods.

Acne, breast tenderness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headaches, changes in sex drive, excessive hair growth, mood changes, and other effects are also possible, although the incidence of these side effects are not known.

If side effects do occur, they usually happen within the first few months of taking Heather, then gradually get better or go away over time.

What is Heather?

Heather is a type of birth control medication known as a Progestin Only Pill (POP). This medication is prescribed to prevent unintended pregnancy. Unlike other oral contraceptive medications, POPs contain only one type of hormone, progestin. Taking a progestin only pill makes your body think it’s pregnant so that a real pregnancy doesn’t occur.

Heather and other types of POPs are frequently prescribed to women who experience migraines with aura, have high blood pressure or take blood pressure medication, or are breastfeeding. POPs may also be a better choice for women who can’t take birth control pills that contain the hormone estrogen for any reason (e.g., they may have an increased risk of blood clots). Some women may be prescribed Heather for other reasons, including the treatment of menstrual disorders like endometriosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rarely, some women taking Heather birth control experience mild weight gain. This is usually due to water retention rather than an increase in body fat. Changes in hormones may also lead to food cravings, which could contribute to weight gain. Fortunately, maintaining an active lifestyle and healthy diet can help you avoid this issue.

Always talk to your doctor or one of our Patient Care Advisors about any medications and supplements you’re currently taking before starting Heather birth control. Heather may interact with other prescription, over-the-counter, or recreational drugs, which may make Heather less effective. Potential drug interactions may occur with antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, medications used to treat hepatitis C or HIV, herbal supplements like St. John’s wort, and others.

If you’re pregnant, don’t use Heather. POPs rarely affect milk production or cause side effects in nursing infants, but you should still let your doctor know if you’re breastfeeding before taking Heather.

Like all POPs, Heather must be taken at the same time every day. If you’re late by just 3 hours and have had heterosexual sex within 5 days, you should use emergency contraception. To avoid unintended pregnancy, you should also abstain from sex for 48 hours after a late or skipped dose.

Like all medications, Heather contains ingredients that some women may be allergic to. Signs of an allergic reaction include rashes, itching, and dizziness. If you experience serious symptoms like wheezing, trouble breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, call 911 right away. Fortunately, serious allergic reactions to Heather are rare!

Always discuss your medical history with your doctor or one of our Patient Care Advisors. Women with certain health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or cancer, might not be good candidates for Heather birth control. We’re happy to help you select a better alternative if necessary.

Heather requires a doctor’s prescription, but it should be available at almost any pharmacy near you. Our patients love the convenience and confidentiality of working with our Pandia Health team! We partner with doctors and birth control specialists in a variety of states and accept most types of insurance. We also offer flexible payment options if you’re not using insurance or paying out-of-pocket.

Most women find Heather birth control to be very affordable, but it’s also easy to find a different type of POP if Heather isn’t the best choice for you. Alternative brands include Sharobel, Deblitane, Camila, Nora-Be, Norlyda, Errin, Jolivette, Lyza, and Jencycla.

Heather birth control pills do not cause infertility. If you want to have a baby, just stop taking the medication (with your doctor’s supervision). It usually takes one or two menstrual cycles for a woman’s fertility to return to normal.

Pandia Health CEO and Co-Founder Dr. Sophia Yen explain more about birth control and fertility in this video.
