What is Chateal Birth Control Pills?

Chateal is a combination oral contraceptive pill (OCP, birth control medication, birth control pills). It prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. Chateal is also prescribed to: treat acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]), treat painful or heavy periods and more. Read More

How to Use Chateal

Chateal is super easy to use.

Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Many women find that taking Chateal before bedtime or just after their evening meal helps reduce nausea and other side effects.

After taking 21 days of white active pills, you’ll switch to 7 inactive pills with no hormones.

These inactive/placebo pills are there to help you keep the habit of taking a pill every day.

Chateal Dosage

Chateal birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Levonorgestrel (progesterone) [1.5mg] and Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) [30 mcg].

Benefits of Chateal

Chateal Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when taking Chateal.

Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, swollen feet or ankles, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — reduced acne, fewer mood swings, and other perks are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented. Symptoms include heart disease, blood clotting, shortness of breath, migraines, vision problems, slurred speech, confusion, and fainting. Those who wear contacts or are nearsighted may notice vision problems as well.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

WILL CHATEAL CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

Some women worry about weight gain when taking Chateal and other birth control pills. While it might give you the munchies, it’s mostly water retention (and not actual fat) that’s to blame.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHATEAL AND CHATEAL EQ?

Chateal has been discontinued and Chateal EQ is the replacement. They have the exact same active ingredients and dosage by the same exact manufacturer (Afaxys). The only difference is the color of pills. Chateal had white active pills, and Chateal EQ has orange active pills. Afaxys changed the names of some of their medications to contain EQ.

WHAT IS CHATEAL EQ?

Chateal EQ is the same as Chateal. They both have the same active ingredients, Levonorgestrel (1.5mg) and Ethinyl Estradiol (30 mcg). Levonorgestrel is an older progestin and has stronger progestational effects. Chateal EQ is an oral birth control with 21 active pills and 7 inert/placebo/sugar pills.

DOES CHATEAL HELPS WITH ACNE?

Yes, Chateal can help with acne by reducing circulating androgen (testosterone) levels.  Androgens promote sebum production, an oil made by your skin. Too much sebum can lead to clogged pores, which create breeding grounds for acne.

TLDR: Chateal reduces sebum production and thus acne.

IS CHATEAL A COMBINATION PILL?

Yes, Chateal blends progesterone and estrogen to make your body think it’s pregnant so a real pregnancy won’t happen.
