How to Use Amethyst

Amethyst is super easy to use! Simply take your Amethyst pill every day, at the same time each day for 28 days. Most women find that taking Amethyst before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. It is recommended to take your first active pill the first Sunday after your period begins.

If you do miss one active pill , take two pills as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one active pill for the rest of the pill pack. If you miss two active pills in a row take two pills per day for two days.

However, if you miss three active pills in a row, do not take the missed pills. Instead you should use a back up birth control method for at least 7 days. Note that you may experience some breakthrough bleeding or spotting if you miss three pills in a row.

Remember that Amethyst and other hormone based birth control cannot be used to prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. In order to prevent sexually transmitted infections, always use condoms when having sexual intercourse. If you do have unprotected sex, you will need to take emergency contraception.

Amethyst Dosage

Amethyst birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Levonorgestrel (progesterone) [90 mg] and Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) [20 mcg].

Amethyst Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when taking Amethyst.

Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — reduced acne, lighter bleeds, and fewer mood swings are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects from taking birth control pills are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented, such as blood clots in the head (a severe new headache, causing double vision, or stroke), blood clots in the chest causing severe shortness of breath, blood clots in the abdomen (causing abdominal pain), blood clots in the leg causing leg swelling and pain.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare. The risk is about 3-6 women out of 10,000 per year using the medication might get a blood clot.

What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is a combination oral contraceptive pill (OCP, birth control medication, birth control pills) made up of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. It works to prevent pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. Amethyst is also prescribed to  treat acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), treat painful or heavy periods, and more.

If you have high blood pressure or take blood pressure medications, this medication is NOT for you. Instead, Pandia Health Medical group’s doctors recommend progestin-only pill (POPs), IUD with hormone (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena, Skyla), implant (nexplanon), the birth control shot (depo-provera), or condoms and spermicide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every prescription comes with a tiny risk of allergies, including with Amethyst. The symptoms are usually mild and include: rashes, itching, dizziness. A severe allergic reaction would be: trouble breathing, and swollen lips, throat, or tongue. If this happens, call 911!

Depending on your medical history, hormone-based birth control may not be for you. It’s important to discuss your medical history with your physician or one of our helpful Pandia Health Patient Care Advisors before you get started on Amethyst, especially if you’ve health problems such as cancer, heart disease, blood clots, uncontrolled diabetes, or high blood pressure.

Amethyst should be available at just about any pharmacy in your area. It does require a prescription from a doctor, though. If you’re hesitant to approach your doctor about Amethyst or simply prefer the privacy, convenience, and ease of the internet, give Pandia Health a try. We have licensed, birth control passionate doctors in every state we operate in. We also accept most forms of private insurance at Pandia Health.

As with any new prescription, you should go over all the other drugs you’re already taking with your doctor or Pandia Health Care Advisor before starting on Amethyst. This includes recreational drugs, over-the-counter meds, and even herbal supplements. Even something that seems relatively harmless such as St. John’s wort can cause Amethyst to be less effective at preventing pregnancy. There are certain meds you should absolutely bring up. These are aromatase inhibitors, cancer, HIV, seizure, and chronic hepatitis C medications.

If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, Amethyst is pretty expensive because it is a brand name. The price for one pack of medication is $71.

No, Amethyst birth control does not stop your periods. There are 28 tablets on each packet and you will have a bleed on the last 7 days of each pack (aka placebo week). If you want to skip your period you can use Amethyst for it. Learn more about #PeriodsOptional and how to skip your period here.
