Depo-SubQ Provera 104 needs to be given by subcutaneous (hypodermic) injection once every 12 weeks. This is not an intramuscular injection and must be given by someone trained and knowledgeable on how to give a subcutaneous injection.
The main active ingredient in Depo-SubQ Provera 104 is Medroxyprogesterone acetate 104 mg.
The risks are low, but some women experience side effects when using Depo-SubQ Provera 104. Minor ones include breakthrough bleeding (spotting) or some gain weight. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — lighter bleeds are fairly common.
The chances of serious side effects from birth control pills are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented, such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, severe abdominal pain, and bone pain.
Depo-SubQ 104 has been associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD). However, pregnancy results in a greater potential loss of BMD. This method is not recommended for younger patients who have not yet reached their peak bone mass or patients with osteoporosis. Alternatives to Depo-SubQ Provera would be the pill, patch, ring.

Clinical studies show that women using Depo-SubQ Provera 104 experience weight gain. It can/will give you munchies and may affect you metabolically. So if you can compensate by decreasing unhealthy snacking, decrease high caloric foods and instead opt for diet soda, water, sugarfree gum, etc. then you should not experience a noticeable weight gain.

Don’t take Depo-SubQ Provera 104 if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction to Depo-SubQ Provera 104 are rare and usually very mild and may include itching, hives, or dizziness. Injection site reactions may occur, be aware that dimpled skin near the injection site is NOT a sign of allergic reaction. Serious allergic reactions to Depo-SubQ Provera 104 can occur in very rare cases. Call 911 immediately if you experience swelling in the lips, mouth, or tongue, or if you have a hard time breathing.
