How to Use Depo-SubQ Provera 104 injection?

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 needs to be given by subcutaneous (hypodermic) injection once every 12 weeks. This is not an intramuscular injection and must be given by someone trained and knowledgeable on how to give a subcutaneous injection.

Depo-SubQ Provera 104 Active ingredient and Dosage

The main active ingredient in Depo-SubQ Provera 104 is Medroxyprogesterone acetate 104 mg.

Benefits of Depo-SubQ Provera 104

  • Safe to use for those women that should avoid estrogen (breastfeeding, migraine with aura, etc.)
  • Periods get lighter or go away completely.
  • Reduces the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]), PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), uterine fibroids, iron deficiency anemia, heavy periods, painful periods, and ectopic pregnancy.

Depo-SubQ Provera Side Effects

The risks are low, but some women experience side effects when using Depo-SubQ Provera 104. Minor ones include breakthrough bleeding (spotting) or some gain weight. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — lighter bleeds are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects from birth control pills are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented, such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, severe abdominal pain, and bone pain.
Depo-SubQ 104 has been associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD). However, pregnancy results in a greater potential loss of BMD. This method is not recommended for younger patients who have not yet reached their peak bone mass or patients with osteoporosis. Alternatives to Depo-SubQ Provera would be the pill, patch, ring.

If you experience swelling/itching of your face/throat/tongue, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness, this may indicate an allergic reaction, please call 911 or get to the emergency room to receive appropriate emergency medical treatment.
