Dr. Sophia Yen, the CEO and co-founder of Pandia Health, appeared on Alex Tomaszewska’s show to discuss birth control, female entrepreneurship, and #PeriodsOptional. Dr. Yen described the importance of the existence of Pandia Health to Tomaszewska, a confidence and success coach for businesswomen.

The Story of Pandia Health

“Growing up in a Taiwanese-American household, our options were… mainly something in science. I love people and science… and wanted to be a doctor since 4th grade.” As a clinical associate professor at Stanford, Dr. Yen gave a TedxTalk to a group of students and found that the primary reason women are not taking birth control is because it is not directly in their hands.

This is why Dr. Yen co-founded Pandia Health — to make women’s lives easier by offering free birth control delivery and de-stigmatizing ideas surrounding contraceptives. Currently, Pandia can deliver across the United States and can write prescriptions for people in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

“What differentiates our company from others is that we are the only company in the birth control delivery space that is founded and led by reproductive health doctors.”

How Does Pandia Health Work?

She mentioned that she would be interested in an international franchise but as of right now, you don’t even need to be a U.S. citizen to get your contraception delivered to you! As long as you are physically in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MI, MN, NV, NY, OH, PA, TN, TX, or WY at the time that the doctor writes you a prescription, you can get up to a year’s supply of birth control sent to you in one package.

This also reduces this feeling of “pill anxiety,” a term coined by Dr. Yen that describes the fear of running out of birth control and the stress of running to the pharmacy each month to get it. Dr. Yen noted that, as a woman, she understands first-hand the physical and mental issues that women experience which is why ““we will always tell you what’s best for your health.”

Pandia Health’s #PeriodsOptional campaign, for instance, promotes a safe and easy way to skip your periods by taking birth control. Dr. Yen stated, “why are we building that uterine lining and bleeding 12 times out of the year for 20 years if we’re not waiting for an embryo to drop?” Turning off your period cycle can decrease period pain, anemia, ovarian and endometrial cancer, and landfill while increasing your productivity.

Pandia Health Supports Women

Research must still be done to determine how effective male contraceptives are yet the side effects are the same as traditional, female birth control methods. For this reason, it’s best for the woman to be on birth control no matter what so she feels in control of her body. Plus, it is always recommended to wear a condom during sex as it is the only method of contraception that protects against STDs.

Dr. Yen stressed the importance of supporting female entrepreneurs and businesses which Tomaszewska echoed by saying, “Ladies, we have to do this… for the next generation. Courage and a proper mindset is the way to go, although the path might be steeper.”

Dr. Yen added, “I would love everybody’s help with getting the word out about Pandia Health and increasing awareness about companies that are founded, led, and owned by women.

Dr. Yen ended by emphasizing, “I live, eat, breathe, and prescribe birth control.”
