Junel Fe 1/20 is a combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) that prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. Read More
Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Most women find that taking Junel Fe 1/20 before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. After taking 21 days of active pills, you’ll switch to seven inactive pills. These are inactive pills with no hormones that are there to get you in the habit of taking your pill every day. These seven tablets do have ferrous fumarate to prevent anemia from the blood loss with monthly bleeds.
Junel Fe 1/20 birth control pills have two main ingredients: 1mg of norethindrone and 20 mcgs of Ethinyl estradiol in each of the 21 first tablets, plus 7 tablets of 75 mg ferrous sulfate.
The risks are very low, but some women have experienced side effects when taking Junel Fe 1/20. Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Positive side effects: reduced acne, lighter bleeds, and fewer mood swings are fairly common.
The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented, such as blood clots in the head (a severe new headache, causing double vision, or stroke), blood clots in the chest causing severe shortness of breath, blood clots in the abdomen (causing abdominal pain), blood clots in the leg causing leg swelling and pain.
These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare.

Junel Fe 1/20 is as effective as any other birth control pill. Birth control pills are 99.7% effective if perfectly used (in a research study) and 93% effective in “regular use” (when real people use it and mess up every now and then).
If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, Junel Fe 1/20 is pretty affordable since it is a generic brand ($21 per pack or $16 when buying 3 packs at a time or more). You can save money as well by choosing any other Junel Fe generics, such as Gildess FE 1/20, Aurovela FE 1/20, Blisovi Fe 1/20, Tarina FE 1/20, Hailey FE 1/20. Generics have the SAME active ingredients and dosage as the name brand. Watch our video explaining generics vs. brand birth control pills.
Junel Fe 1/20 uses a blend of two hormones, estrogen and progestin, to make your body think it’s pregnant so a real pregnancy won’t happen.
Junel Fe 1/20 is a combined oral contraceptive pill.
Theoretically, it’s effective immediately (if you start on your period) vs. other times, you need to use backup for 7 days. To be absolutely safe we recommend backup or abstain for the first month. For more information, click here.
