New Questions

Periods are optional! The only reason that we build the lining of our uterus every month and pop out an egg (ovulation) is to make a baby. On average in the US, periods start at 12 years old and women have their first baby at 26 y/o. If we aren’t going to make a baby, then why bother with that? Every time we shed our lining and pop out an egg unnecessarily, that adds to the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer. That’s 14 years of monthly periods for no good reason. So you can turn those off with the ring or pill or IUD with hormones. It prevents endometrial and ovarian cancer and anemia. Women and physicians have done it since 1960s. And the natural state of a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding and she has no periods during that time. Refer her to the wings of inspired business podcast for more info.

Yes. Generics, by law, have the same active ingredients as their name-brand versions. Generics may differ on the inactive ingredients.

What is Portia?

Portia is a combination oral contraceptive pill (OCP, birth control medication, birth control pills). It prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. Portia is also prescribed to: treat acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]), treat painful or heavy periods, and more.

If you have high blood pressure or take blood pressure medications, this medication is NOT for you. Instead, Pandia Health Medical group’s doctors recommend progestin-only pill (POPs)IUD with hormone (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena, Skyla), implant (nexplanon), the birth control shot (depo-provera), or condoms and spermicide.

How to use Portia

Portia is super easy to use. Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Many women find that taking Portia before bedtime or just after their largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. After taking 21 days of active pills, you’ll switch to 7  inactive pills with no hormones. The inactive/placebo/bleeding week pills are there to help you in the habit of taking your pill every day.

Dosage

Portia birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Levonogestrel 1.5 mg (progesterone) and Ethinyl Estradiol 30 mcg (estrogen).

Benefits of Portia

  1. Periods get lighter. If you are usually a 7 day person, it goes down to like 5 days. If you use 5 pads/tampons a day, it goes down to 3.
  2. Improves acne.
  3. You can use it to make #PeriodsOptional. Just skip the last week of pills and go straight into the next pack. See our CEO/Founder’s talk at the bottom of this page

Portia Birth Control Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced side effects when taking Portia. Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — reduced acne, lighter bleeds, and fewer mood swings are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented,  such as blood clots in the head (a severe new headache, causing double vision, or stroke), blood clots in the chest causing severe shortness of breath, blood clots in the abdomen (causing abdominal pain), blood clots in the leg causing leg swelling and pain.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare.

FAQ

WILL PORTIA CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

Some women worry about weight gain when taking Portia and other birth control pills. While it might give you the munchies, it’s mostly water retention (and not actual fat) that’s to blame.

IS PORTIA A LOW DOSE BIRTH CONTROL?

Yes, although depends on your definition of low dose. In the old days, pills had 110mcg of estrogen and then 50 mcg. So when research says low dose, they mean anything under 50 mcg of estrogen.

When we say low dose at Pandia Health we mean anything less than 30 mcg of estrogen which is NOT good for your bones if you are under the age of 30 years old. We recommend that you use at least 30mcg if you are under 30 years old. We recommend that you use at least 30mcg if you are under 30 years old.

DOES PORTIA BIRTH CONTROL HELPS WITH ACNE?

Yes, Portia can help with acne by reducing circulating androgen (testosterone) levels.  Androgens promote sebum production, an oil made by your skin. Too much sebum can lead to clogged pores, which create breeding grounds for acne.

TLDR Portia reduces sebum production and thus acne.

HOW EASY IS IT TO GET PORTIA?

Portia should be available at just about any pharmacy in your area. It does require a prescription from a doctor, though. If you’re hesitant to approach your doctor about Portia or simply prefer the privacy, convenience, and ease of the internet, give Pandia Health a try. We have experienced, birth control passionate, licensed doctors in every state we operate in. We also accept almost all forms of major private insurance at Pandia Health.

No insurance? No problem. We offer many payment options to fit your needs.

If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, Portia is pretty affordable because it’s a generic brand. You can also save money by choosing one of several other Portia generics, such as Chateal, Marlissa, Altavera, Levora, Lillow, Kurvelo or Ayuna. Generics have the SAME active ingredients and dosage as the name brand. Watch our video explaining generics vs. brand birth control pills.

HOW DOES PORTIA WORKS?

Portia uses a combination of two hormones, estrogen, and progestin, to make your body think it’s pregnant so a real pregnancy won’t happen.

DOES BIRTH CONTROL CAUSE INFERTILITY?

Some women worry that birth control pills like Portia can cause long-term fertility issues.

This isn’t true. If you want to have a baby soon, just stop the medication and you should return to full fertility within a cycle or two after stopping.
