What is Marlissa Birth Control Pills?

Marlissa is a combination oral contraceptive pill (OCP, birth control medication, birth control pills). It prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. This medication is also prescribed to: treat acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]), treat painful or heavy periods and more. Read More

How to Use Marlissa

Marlissa is super easy to use.

Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Many women find that taking Marlissa before bedtime or just after their evening meal helps reduce nausea and other side effects. After taking 21 days of white active pills, you’ll switch to seven peach-colored ones. These are inactive pills with no hormones that are there to get you in the habit of taking your pill every day.

Marlissa Dosage

Marlissa birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Norgestimate 0.25 mg (progesterone) and Ethinyl Estradiol 0.035 mg (estrogen).

Benefits of Marlissa

Periods get lighter. If you are usually a 7 day person, it goes down to like 5 days. If you use 5 pads/tampons a day, it goes down to 3.

You can use it to make #PeriodsOptional. Just skip the last week of pills and go straight into the next pack. See our CEO/Founder’s talk here.

Reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS])

Improves acne.

Marlissa Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when taking Marlissa. Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, swollen feet or ankles, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — reduced acne, fewer mood swings, and other perks are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented such as blood clotting, shortness of breath, migraines, vision problems, slurred speech, confusion, and fainting. Those who wear contacts or are nearsighted may notice vision problems as well.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

WILL MARLISSA CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

Some women worry about weight gain when taking Marlissa and other birth control pills. While it might give you the munchies, it’s mostly water retention (and not actual fat) that’s to blame.

ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MARLISSA?

As with any new prescription, you should go over anything you’re already taking with your Doctor before starting on Marlissa. This includes recreational drugs, over-the-counter meds, and even herbal supplements. Even something as relatively harmless as St. John’s wort can cause Marlissa to be less effective at preventing pregnancy. There are certain meds you should absolutely bring up. These are aromatase inhibitors, cancer medications, HIV drugs, seizure medicines, and those used for chronic hepatitis C.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I BE AWARE OF WITH MARLISSA?

Pretty much every kind of prescription birth control comes with a tiny risk of allergies, including Marlissa. The symptoms are usually mild and include rashes, itching, dizziness. If you experience trouble breathing or swollen lips, throat, or tongue, call 911.

Depending on your medical history, hormone-based birth control may not be for you. It’s important to discuss your medical history with your physician or one of our helpful Pandia Health Patient Care Advisors before you get started on Marlissa, especially if you’ve have health problems such as cancer, heart disease, blood clots, uncontrolled diabetes, or high blood pressure.

HOW EASY IS IT TO GET MARLISSA?

Marlissa should be available at just about any pharmacy in your area. It does require a prescription from a doctor, though. If you’re hesitant to approach your doctor about Marlissa or simply prefer the privacy, convenience, and ease of the internet, give Pandia Health a try. We have experienced, birth control passionate, licensed doctors in every state we operate in. We also accept almost all forms of major private insurance at Pandia Health.

No insurance? No problem. We offer many payment options to fit your needs.

If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, Levora is pretty affordable because it’s a generic brand. You can also save money by choosing one of several other Levora generics, such as Chateal, Levora, Altavera, Portia, Lillow, Kurvelo or Ayuna. Generics have the SAME active ingredients and dosage as the name brand. Watch our video explaining generics vs. brand birth control pills.

DOES BIRTH CONTROL CAUSE INFERTILITY?

Some women worry that birth control pills like Marlissa can cause long-term fertility issues.

This isn’t true. If you want to have a baby soon, just stop the medication and you should return to full fertility within a cycle or two after stopping.
