What is LoSeasonique Birth Control Pills?

LoSeasonique is a “low dose” combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP, birth control medication, birth control pills). LoSeasonique prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. LoSeasonique is also prescribed to: treat acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]), treat painful or heavy periods, and more. Read More

How to Use LoSeasonique

LoSeasonique is very easy to use!

Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Most women find that taking LoSeasonique before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. It is recommended to take your first active pill the first Sunday after your period begins.

After taking 84 days of active pills, you’ll switch to 7 inactive pills. These are reminder pills with no hormones that exist to keep you in the habit of taking your pill every day. These seven tablets do have ferrous fumarate to prevent anemia from the blood loss with monthly bleeds.

If you do miss one active pill , take two pills as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one active pill for the rest of the pill pack. If you miss two active pills in a row take two pills per day for two days. However, if you miss three active pills in a row, do not take the missed pills. Instead you should use backup contraception for at least 7 days to continue to prevent pregnancy. Note that you may experience some bleeding or spotting if you miss three pills in a row.

Remember that LoSeasonique and other hormonal birth control cannot be used to prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. In order to prevent STDs, always use condoms when having sexual intercourse.

LoSeasonique Dosage

LoSeasonique birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Levonorgestrel 1 mg (progesterone) and Ethinyl Estradiol 20 mcg (estrogen).

Benefits of LoSeasonique

  • Periods get lighter. If you are usually a 7 day person, it goes down to like 5 days. If you use 5 pads/tampons a day, it goes down to 3.
  • You can use it to make #PeriodsOptional. Each pack comes 84 active pills, so you will only have a withdraw at the end of those active pills. See our CEO/Founder’s talk at the bottom of this page
  • Improves acne.

LoSeasonique Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when taking LoSeasonique. Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, swollen feet or ankles, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Nursing mothers should not take LoSeasonique because it may decrease breast milk production.

Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — reduced acne, fewer mood swings, and other perks are fairly common.

The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented. Symptoms include heart disease, blood clotting, shortness of breath, migraines, vision problems, slurred speech, confusion, and fainting. Those who wear contacts or are nearsighted may notice vision problems as well.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

WILL LOSEASONIQUE CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

Some women worry about weight gain when taking LoSeasonique and other birth control pills. While it might give you the munchies, it’s mostly water retention (and not actual fat) that’s to blame.

ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT LOSEASONIQUE?

As with any new prescription, you should go over anything you’re already taking with your doctor or Pandia Health Care Advisor before starting on LoSeasonique. This includes recreational drugs, over-the-counter meds, and even herbal supplements. Even something that seems relatively harmless such as St. John’s wort can cause LoSeasonique to be less effective at preventing pregnancy. There are certain meds you should absolutely bring up with your doctor. These are aromatase inhibitors, cancer, HIV, seizure, and chronic hepatitis C medications.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I BE AWARE OF WITH LOSEASONIQUE?

Pretty much every medication comes with a tiny risk of allergies, including LoSeasonique. The symptoms are usually mild and include rashes, itching, dizziness. If you experience trouble breathing or swollen lips, throat, or tongue, call 911.

Depending on your medical history, hormonal contraceptives may not be for you. It’s important to discuss your medical history with your physician or one of our helpful Pandia Health Patient Care Advisors before you get started on LoSeasonique., especially if you’ve had health problems such as liver disease, cancer, heart disease, blood clots, uncontrolled diabetes, or high blood pressure.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEASONIQUE AND LOSEASONIQUE?

The only difference between the medications is the level of estrogen. Loseasonsique has only 20mcg of estrogen. We do NOT recommend less than 30mcg of estrogen unless you are 30 years or older. Less than 30mcg is NOT good for someone under 30 years old.  If you are 30 years old or older, we recommend Seasonique, which has 30mg of estrogen to protect your bones.

HOW EASY IS IT TO GET LOSEASONIQUE?

LoSeasonique should be available at just about any pharmacy in your area. It does require a prescription from a doctor, though. If you’re hesitant to approach your doctor about LoSeasonique or simply prefer the privacy, convenience, and ease of the internet, give Pandia Health a try. We have licensed, birth control passionate doctors in every state we operate in. We also accept most forms of private insurance at Pandia Health.

No insurance? No problem! We offer many payment options to fit your needs. If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, LoSeasonique is an expensive pill because it’s a name brand ($516/pack of 84 active pills).

HOW DOES LOSEASONIQUE WORK?

LoSeasonique uses a combination of two hormones, estrogen and progestin, to make your body think it’s pregnant so a real pregnancy won’t happen. It’s super easy to use. Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Many women find that taking LoSeasonique before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. After taking 84 days of active pills, you’ll switch to 7 inactive pills. These are inactive pills with no hormones that are there to help you get in the habit of taking your pill every day.

DO YOU GET YOUR PERIOD ON LOSEASONIQUE?

Yes, you should have a withdrawal bleed during some of the days of the last 7 days of each pack, after taking 84 of the active pills. However, some women don’t have bleeds on birth control pills, but check a pregnancy test to be sure.

CAN YOU SKIP THE YELLOW PILLS ON LOSEASONIQUE?

You can skip the 7 yellow pills on Loseasonique (those are the inactive or placebo pills) and move to the next pack. You will be able to skip your withdrawal bleed this way. Learn more about how to make #PeriodsOptional here.
