What is Loestrin Fe 1/20 Birth Control Pills?

Loestrin Fe 1/20 is a combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) that prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. Read More

How to Use Loestrin Fe 1/20

Loestrin Fe 1/20 is very easy to use!

Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Most women find that taking Loestrin Fe 1/20 before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. It is recommended to take your first active pill the first Sunday after your period begins.

After taking 21 days of active pills, you’ll switch to 7 inactive pills. These are reminder pills with no hormones that exist to keep you in the habit of taking your pill every day. These 7 tablets do have ferrous fumarate to prevent anemia from the blood loss with monthly bleeds.

If you do miss one active pill , take two pills as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one active pill for the rest of the pill pack. If you miss two active pills in a row take two pills per day for two days. However, if you miss three active pills in a row, do not take the missed pills. Instead you should use a backup contraception method for at least 7 days. Note that you may experience some breakthrough bleeding or spotting if you miss three pills in a row.

Remember that Loestrin Fe 1/20 and other hormone based birth control cannot be used to prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. In order to prevent STDs, always use condoms when having sexual intercourse.

Loestrin Fe 1/20 Dosage

Loestrin Fe 1/20 uses a combination of two hormones estrogen (Ethinyl Estradiol, 0.02 mg) and progestin (Norgestimate Acetate 1mg) which actually makes your body think it’s pregnant in order to prevent pregnancy.

Benefits of Loestrin Fe 1/20

  • Periods get lighter. If you are usually a 7-day person, it goes down to about 5 days. If you use 5 pads/tampons a day, it should decrease to 3.
  • You can use it to make #PeriodsOptional. Just skip the last week of pills and go straight into the next pack. See our CEO/Founder’s talk here.
  • Reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]).
  • Can be used to improve acne.

Loestrin Fe 1/20 Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when taking Loestrin 1/20.

Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, upset stomach, swollen feet or ankles, and slightly elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels. Women who are breast feeding should not take Loestrin Fe 1/20 because it may slow breast milk production. Positive side effects are also a possibility, too — reduced acne, fewer mood swings, less painful periods, and other perks are fairly common.
The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented. Symptoms include heart disease, blood clotting, chest pain and shortness of breath, migraines, vision problems, slurred speech, confusion, and fainting. Those who wear contact lenses or are nearsighted may notice vision problems as well.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare. The risk is about 3-6 women out of 10,000 per year using the medication might get a blood clot.

HOW MUCH IS LOESTRIN FE 1/20 WITHOUT INSURANCE?

If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, Loestrin Fe 1/20 is pretty expensive due to its brand name ($225 per pack). Generics have the SAME active ingredients and dosage as the name brand. Watch our video explaining generics vs. brand birth control pills.

HOW DOES LOESTRIN FE 1/20 WORK?

Loestrin Fe 1/20 uses a blend of two hormones, estrogen and progestin, to make your body think it’s pregnant so a real pregnancy won’t happen.

HOW LONG DOES LOESTRIN FE 1/20 TAKE TO WORK?

Theoretically, it’s effective immediately (if you start on your period) vs. other times. However, it is recommended that you use a backup contraceptive method during penis-in-vagina sex for at least seven days. WHAT SHOULD I AVOID WHILE TAKING LOESTRIN FE 1/20?

Before starting Loestrin Fe 1/20, inform your healthcare provider of medications (recreational drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, supplements, or other drugs) you are already taking, as there may be potential drug interactions that impact the effectiveness. Tell your doctor if you have any symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, trouble breathing or swelling.

Additionally, alert your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions or family history of breast cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, gallbladder problems, or liver cancer as you may be at higher risk of experiencing serious side effects.
